I was hoping to make a new talk on this topic, but because I had other duties I will place here the section of Good Ground for this day as we prepare our hearts and our minds to enter into the holy season of Lent. You will only find out in eternity what graces our prayers, sacrifices and almsgiving obtained for those in need of conversion. Many people come to confession during this season after many years away from the sacraments.
Here is what Good Ground explains about these Lenten practices:
February 17 The Practices of Lent: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving
Learn about it…. Lent, which begins tomorrow, is a time of refocusing our lives on those things that bring us true happiness, both in this life and the life to come. For many centuries the Church has encouraged the faithful to three practices during Lent to help us turn away from those things that keep us from God and to draw closer to Him: prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Prayer: Taking some extra time with the Lord will give a new dimension to your life. There are many ways you can add prayer to your life. You could go to a daily Mass during Lent. Or begin reading more of the Bible or other spiritual book. The Rosary is another good prayer for Lent or anytime. Parishes often pray the Stations of the Cross once a week and attending those services help you to be mindful of the great love of our Savior.
Fasting: The fast required by the Church on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday consists of having one main meal and two smaller meals during the day, with nothing in between. You may want to fast once a week during Lent, or you may wish to give up a favorite food or drink as a sacrifice.
Almsgiving: It is very important to share with those in need. During Lent you can give a little more than usual to the poor. Be sure to set aside some money for your parish Lenten collection or send something to a good cause you hear or read about on T.V. or online.
Think about it…What practices have you decided to do this Lent? How have you done with Lenten practices in the past?
Read about it…Rom 12:1-2
Pray about it…Ask God to lead you to those practices that will bring you close to Him, not only during Lent, but always.
Do it …Be faithful to your Lenten practices.
